- Abstract:
- The article focuses on the emergence of Islamic militancy and radicalization in the Arab cities amid underdevelopment. It is said that urban residents who have rural backgrounds and who fail to adapt to the mainstream economy and social fabric are the ones likely to be recruited by militant Islamic groups. It relates the association between urban ruralization and Islamic militancy in which the failure of modernization in states in the Middle East has affected the youth, resulting to cognitive dissonance for many of them. It adds that urbanization that lacks effective government policies leads to the destruction of traditional values that are not replaced by modernity values needed for integration in an urban society.
