The paper provides design and security considerations for Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) transformation from a traditional Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) WAN architecture. The rapid adoption of cloud services makes traditional network architectures untenable for enterprises with time-to-market and scalability demands. SD-WANs leverage software-defined networking technology to decouple control and data planes, centralizing orchestration, and network management tasks. The best part is they can work alongside traditional WAN architectures forming transport layer agnostic overlay WAN networks. The primary benefits of SD-WANs are reduction in recurring network costs, centralized network, and security management, enabling network agility and easy scalability. However, do these advantages come at a cost? Are there any trade-ins for businesses to realize these benefits of SD-WANs?
