Description
- Abstract:
- Cardiac patch therapies have become a promising treatment to lower the risk of heart failure after myocardial infarct to restore heart function. Engineered tissue scaffolds with microarchitecture are designed to construct cardiac patches which have similar mechanical properties to native myocardium. We studied the effect of composite architecture on the overall response of the engineered tissue scaffold patch using three-dimensional finite element models constructed in Abaqus. Ogden nonlinear hyperelastic model and Neo-Hookean model were selected to represent the soft matrix and the stiff fibers respectively. The model parameters were calibrated using Coulombe Lab’s uniaxial tension test data on these materials. Longitudinal and transverse tension simulations are then implemented to find the mechanical behavior of the composite to study anisotropy and the effect of various microarchitectural design parameters, including fiber distance and angle. We have also developed a nonlinear hyperelastic continuum constitutive model to efficiently simulate the anisotropic response of engineered tissue scaffolds patch on three dimensional heart geometry.
