Workbook from “A Period of Consequences” : The Historical Effects of Climate Change on Population Displacement and Their Implications for Governing Climate-Related Displacement, 1992-2018

Description

Abstract:
The RMD file is an R Markdown file created using RStudio. Climate change and the difficulty of addressing displacement are not future problems: they are challenges the international community faces and has been facing for some time. In this thesis, I examine the historical realtionship between climate change and displacement as well as the evolution of legal protections for different categories of displaced persons. Using data from UNHCR and the QoG dataset, I fit a series of OLS regressions to analyze the historical impact of climate change on displacement and examine the potential future relationship between these two governence challenges. I find a strong positive relationship between climate change and global displacement and create three possible forecast models depending on the severity of future climate change. These forecasts put the number of future climate refugees at between 100 million and 1.1 billion. In my conclusion, I examine some of the challenges that governments will have to overcome in order to effectively mitigate the continued impact of climate change on displacement as well as some of the many difficulties inhibiting a possible solution to this issue.
