A Crisis within a Crisis: The Effect of COVID-19 on Renters in Providence and Rhode Island

Description

Abstract:
This research studies the intersection of COVID-19 and the eviction crisis in Rhode Island. In our work, we centers tenant, advocate, and organizer narratives in the fight for housing justice. A mixed-methods approach consisting of interviews, GIS analysis, and survey collection was used. We found that renters across the board are struggling to pay their rent due to COVID-19 related job loss and that the state of Rhode Island should be doing more to assist tenants right now. We recommend several policy and budget changes to be implemented by the Providence City Council and Rhode Island State Legislature.
