Funeral of Garibaldi at Caprera: place where the body was to have been cremated; the body lying in state

Description

Abstract:
General Giuseppe Garibaldi passed away at 6:21 PM on June 2, 1882 in his house on the island of Caprera, located off of the northern coast of Sardinia, where he had retired in the last years of his life. A few moments before passing away, Garibaldi asked to look at his beloved sea one last time. The two images portray the location where the body was to be cremated (top) and the body of Garibaldi lying in state (bottom). The general had explicitely stated in his will that his remains be cremated. However, the family - apparently pressed by the Italian Prime Minister, Francesco Crispi, who allegedly wished to preserve the body of one of the legendary figures of the Italian Risorgimento - did not oblige to Garibaldi's wish. His body was rather embalmed and buried in a granite tomb on the island.
