Cournonnement de la place d'armes des tranchées piémontaises, sur la droite des attaques du front de la place.

Description

Abstract:
Piedmontese troops carry shovels, mattocks, and rolled up wooden screening in order to dig trenches and install blinds. An imposing ortress lies opposite a body of water. It is possible that the present scene represents the Siege of Gaeta, which occurred in late 1860 and early 1861. Piedmontese troops under General Cialdini bombarded the coastal city, which Neapolitan troops attempted to defend from a massive fortress. On March 20, 1861 the forces of Francis II, King of the Two Sicilies finally surrendered to the Piedmontese, thus bringing an to end the Bourbon control of Southern Italy and the demise of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, which had been established in the 12th century.
