Abstract:
Portrait of E. E. Ellsworth. Ellsworth was killed after taking down a Confederate flag during the occupation of Alexandria, Virginia. Ellsworth was a close friend of Abraham Lincoln. 'Him! the first great martyr in this great cause. Him! the premature victim of his self-devoting heart. Him! cut off by Providence in the hour of deep anxiety and thick gloom, pouring out his generous blood like water before he knew whether it would fertilize a land of free-dom or bondage." is printed below the image.
