Clare Elizabeth Goodale, class of 1939

Abstract:
In the first part of this interview, Elizabeth (Kenyon) Goodale discusses her Aunt Nettie\u2019s experience as a member of Pembroke's first entering class in 1895. Elizabeth goes on to discuss her time at Brown and living with her Aunt Nettie and Uncle John on Keene Street. She notes that her aunt was part of the first entering class of the Women\u2019s College in Brown University, while she became the first woman alumna trustee of the Corporation. Both she and her aunt were Presidents of the Alumnae Association. She discusses Bessie Rudd and the "bubbler" installed in the athletic field behind Meehan Auditorium in her honor. In the second part of the interview, Elizabeth discusses life after graduation and the effects of the Great Depression on work and education; the Brown/Pembroke merger; gender discrimination; going to secretarial school; being Assistant to the Social Director at Pembroke and Secretary to President Wriston at Brown University.

Biographical note: Clara Elizabeth Kenyon graduated from Brown University in 1939 with a degree in European History. She then attended a secretarial school in Worcester, MA to learn typing and shorthand. She worked as secretary to President Wriston for 7 years before marrying her husband - a Brown graduate. Coming from a family of several Pembrokers, Elizabeth was active as an alumna and was elected President of the Alumnae Association. She later became the first female, alumna, trustee of Brown's Corporation in1965. Elizabeth passed away on December 10, 2010.
