Ladd Observatory opened on Oct. 21, 1891. The land that the Observatory was built is the highest point in a neighborhood of few houses and well suited for the obervatory. From 1893 to 1973 Ladd Observatory provided time signals, first to the R.I. Electric Protective Company, which distributed them throughout the state, then in 1906 to the local fire stations.
