- Abstract of “Egyptian and Minoan Relations During the Eighteenth Dynasty/Late Bronze Age” by Amanda L. Davis, Ph.D., Brown University, May 2016 Past scholars have been divided on what kinds of interactions took place between Egypt and Minoan Crete during the Eighteenth Dynasty/Late Bronze Age. To determine what relationship (if any) existed between the two, an examination of the textual records was necessary to identity the “Keftiu” in Egyptian texts. The Minoan pottery in Egypt was then discussed to reveal whether or not there was evidence for trade between Crete and Egypt. The wall paintings featuring Keftiu figures in several Egyptian Eighteenth Dynasty private tombs were then examined to determine what modes of interactions existed between the two. These tomb paintings, taken along with the textual and archaeological evidence, suggest that “Keftiu” was synonymous with Minoan Crete. The influence of Minoan art in Egypt and in the Near East was then examined to confirm the existence of travelling Minoan artisans. This evidence supports that a few members of the Egyptian royal and elite class admired and used elements of Minoan palatial art in their palaces and private tombs. The study concluded with an examination of Egyptian material in Crete, to further contextualize the Minoan goods in Egypt. The plethora of Egyptian luxury items in Crete compared to the paltry evidence for Minoan material in Egypt suggests that Egyptian goods were more desired by the Minoans than vice versa. Egyptian goods in Minoan Crete and Minoan pottery in Egypt also appeared to have been only available to a select few in both societies. The evidence strongly suggests that some upper class Egyptians admired and utilized elements of Minoan elite culture and that direct contact likely took place between Egypt and Crete. The relationship between Egypt and Crete is another example of the broader trends of interconnectivity and internationalism characteristic of the period.
