- This study used a signal detection approach to examine two possible psychophysical time scales, log timing and linear timing, with rats and human subjects. Subjects' decision criteria were varied by manipulating probability of stimulus presentation (Experiment 1 and 2) or by using a rating design (Experiment 3 and 4). The obtained zROC curves were mostly parallel to the diagonal, suggesting that the variability is constant through the subjective continuum, which matches the prediction of log timing. A modified SET, based on the assumption that perception is logarithmic, was proposed and applied to a peak procedure and a bisection procedure. Results show that the log-SET can fit the data as well as SET, which suggests that a linear time scale is not a necessary assumption for timing theories.
