- Abstract:
- A project originating from a large-scale research paper in 2014, The Politics of Ambiguity explores the ambiguous networks of Turkish society and social movements in two cases: Gezi Park in 2013 and the attempted military coup in July 2016. The piece is a 36-page zine, printed and copied on 8.5" x 11" 70-pound paper, and bound with a five-hole pamphlet stitch. Four editions are original prints, three are copies produced at Kinko's. The content is sourced in its entirety from Twitter or written pieces on sharing-based websites such as Facebook and Medium. Among other topics, my selection of content concerned the interplay of mediums and time -- the physical zine with online-based content, the 90s medium with the contemporary subject matter. This interplay ultimately dictated the form of the zine, with content slightly askew and unlabeled, exploring the notion of uncertainty in digital and physical networks. Repetition is also visible throughout, exploring the repetitive yet entirely new social movements throughout Turkish history. While the subject matter (interactions of digital and physical networks in Turkey, based in network theory) is nuanced, requiring careful rationale to effectively articulate network dynamics, I embraced the heavy-handed nature of zines, collaging and splicing content throughout the spread to further explore the convoluted nature of both the subject matter and the form. Production was interactive and thoughtful, and reading and formulating an understanding of the piece mandates a similar level of interactivity and thoughtfulness. In content and in form, the piece requires further development, experimentation, and iteration -- the snapshot, however, of ongoing research and ongoing social and political environments, offers a glimpse into the convoluted and ever-changing contemporary network of Turkey.
