The Mound

Description

Abstract:
Ghost-written for Zealia Brown Reed Bishop during December 1929. With some manuscript corrections by HPL. These typed sheets (probably prepared by Frank Belknap Long, Jr.), with proof-reader's marks by August W. Derleth, were bound together by Robert H. Barlow. Also included were two letters to HPL from Zealia Bishop (1934 May 26) and Frank Belknap Long, Jr. (1934 May 28), as well as an envelope addressed to HPL from Frank Belknap Long, Jr., postmarked May 28, 1934. On the front end-sheet is a note in Barlow's hand: "The Mound was according to his statement altogether written by Lovecraft (from a little synopsis something like 'There is an Indian mound near here, which is haunted by a headless ghost. Sometimes it is a woman') This copy was touched up in pencil by Derleth for sales purposes. When I acquired it in 1934, from Long - spliced up with ZBR's incomplete copy L[ovecraft] perceived by Belknap had written by FBL & ZBR - 'the two people who had nothing to do with it' - & thereupon suggested that I call it The Mound by R. H. Barlow." First published in Weird Tales, 35, No. 6 (Nov 1940).
