- Abstract:
- This abstract describes research that will be part of a larger review article entitled “LGBTQ Youth: Enhancing Care for Gender and Sexual Minorities.” The authors reviewed the past five years of scientific research on mental health in transgender adolescents. The goal was to identify, highlight and decipher the most clinically relevant topics receiving increased attention in this area. Psychological conditions and neurodevelopmental disorders discussed in detail include autism spectrum disorder (ASD), eating disorders, non-suicidal self-injury, and suicidality. Relevant factors also described were depression, anxiety, trauma, and co-morbidities for transgender adolescents, as well as interventions that can ameliorate or prevent these associated conditions.
