Development of a drop tower impact system for characterizing compressible foams under dynamic loads

Description

Abstract:
Foams are widely used for impact protection. In order to utilize foams to their full potential a predictive model for their time-dependent mechanical deformation is necessary. However, due to their complex micro-structures, their mechanical model has not been fully completed. The experiments to test foams’ dynamic property within impact protection is inadequate. This thesis investigates the dynamic behavior of foams under different strain rate and strain. We use a drop tower to apply required impact on foams. Impact video is recorded by high-speed camera and force data is collected by load cell. We use Topology-based Particle Tracking(T-PT) algorithm to resolve displacement field from video to get strain data, then synchronize it with load data. We find the maximum strain rate during impact is related to impact velocity and maximum strain is decided by impact energy. We can find non-linearity, hysteresis and hardening phenomenon between the loading process and the unloading process. This test supply experimental data for foam under impact strain rate.
