Melodrama of the Unknown Woman

Description

Abstract:
This play is about one woman’s journey in the aftermath of sexual assault. Utilizing different narrative tropes and mediums, she attempts to make sense of what happened to her. The work draws on a canon of suffering women, spanning from Ovid and Shakespeare to Carmen Maria Machado, Emerald Fennell, and Anna Burns. It asks audiences to consider the fragmented nature of trauma, as well as the power and failure of stories as tools for healing.
