Description
- Abstract:
- Lecture slides about the history of timekeeping at Ladd Observatory. Presented by Michael Umbricht at the Ladd Observatory 125th anniversary on October 21, 2016. The presentation describes the calibration of precision mechanical pendulum clocks to synchronize the timepieces with telescope observations of stars. The time from the clocks at the observatory was then sent by telegraph wires to the City of Providence Fire Department and the Rhode Island Electric Protective Company. Accurate time was then distributed to local businesses.
