Description

Abstract:
The opening session of the fifth annual Brown University/Providence Journal Public Affairs conference. This conference, a three-day event, was entitled "Cost vs. Care: America's Health Care Dilemma." Brown University President Howard Swearer and Michael P. Metcalf, chairman and chief executive officer of the Providence Journal Co., give brief introductory remarks and introduce the conference's opening speaker, economist Burton Weisbrod. In his speech "Costs and Causes: An Economist's Viewpoint," Weisbrod discusses the drivers f increasing cost of healthcare in America and economic trade offs involved in public spending. He asserts that monetary savings in the health care system will not be achieved without sacrifices in the quality of care. His speech is followed by audience Q&A.
