Abstract:: This essay’s starting point is that the historiographical horizon of Portuguese imperial studies has changed significantly since the 2003 e-JPH debate due to a variety of shifts in the wider milieu in which production of knowledge about Portuguese imperial history takes place. In addition to the structural obstacles mentioned by scholars in the e-JPH debate, thematic choices and analytical lenses are also critical to the e-JPH debate goal of integrating Portuguese imperial history in the Anglo-Saxon academia. Portuguese imperial studies are deeply divided along geographic and thematic sub-fields, with lack of communication between these historiographical streams preventing cross-fertilization and hindering the emergence of general thematic axes to break away from balkanization in the studies of the Portuguese empire. While social history has fueled the rise of a vibrant sub-field of scholars working on inquisition studies and missionary work, particularly regarding colonial Brazil, a strong focus on imperial administrative history still remains, putting Portuguese imperial history somewhat at odds with trends towards social and cultural history in other historiographies of European empires. This essay suggests that ongoing trends towards social and cultural history in studies of Portuguese imperial possessions offer the potential to bring this historiography into the mainstream of imperial studies writ large. To achieve higher visibility in the Anglo-Saxon academic world, scholars of Portuguese imperial history will need to further engage with themes that have dominated recent historiographical debates about empires such as the global ramifications of imperial power, cross-cultural exchange, and non-elite agency.; O ponto de partida deste ensaio é que o horizonte historiográfico dos estudos do império português mudou bastante desde o debate de 2003 no e-JPH, devido a um leque de mudanças nos meios em que a produção de conhecimento sobre a história imperial portuguesa ocorre. Além dos obstáculos estruturais mencionados pelos estudiosos no debate do e-JPH, escolhas temáticas e óticas analíticas também são essenciais à meta do debate do e-JPH: integrar a história imperial portuguesa à academia anglo-saxônica. Os estudos do império português estão divididos profundamente entre campos geográficos e temáticos, com a falta de comunicação entre essas vertentes historiográficas impedindo a mistura produtiva e impedindo a emergência de temáticas que desviam da tendência à balcanização nos estudos do império português. Enquanto a história social apressou a emergência de outro campo de estudiosos ativos nas questões de estudos da Inquisição e do trabalho missionário, especialmente em relação ao Brasil colonial, cntinua a haver uma grande ênfase na história administrativa imperial, o que coloca a história imperial portuguesa em oposição às tendências em favor da história social e cultural na historiografia de outros impérios europeus. Este ensaio propõe que as tendências à história social e cultural nos estudos do império português têm o potencial de levar essa historiografia às pràticas correntes no campo maior de estudos imperiais. Para conseguir maior visibilidade no mundo acadêmico anglo-saxônico, estudiosos da história imperial portuguesa precisarão dialogar mais com os temas que dominaram os debates historiográficos recentes sobre impérios, como as ramificações globais do poder imperial, a troca entre culturas e o agenciamento das não-elites.
