- This paper reconstructs the efforts to compile, catalogue, and study documents in foreign archives pertaining to the History of Brazil. It focuses on the decade-long "Barão do Rio Branco" Rescue Project, developed by a research team committed to making the documentation from the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino (Overseas Historical Archive), in Lisbon, fully available to researchers. The paper chronicles the development of the project from 1986 to 2004, as well as earlier attempts that contributed to the same goal. It also includes sections detailing subprojects dedicated to the documentation from different states in Brazil, and bibliography of inventories and catalogues already made available.
- Este texto reconstrói os esforços de compilação, catalogação e estudo de documentos em arquivos estrangeiros relativos à História do Brasil. Enfoca-se no projeto de resgate «Barão do Rio Branco», que se estendeu por mais de uma década, desenvolvido por uma equipe de investigadores comprometida com tornar a documentação do Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino, em Lisboa, inteiramente disponíveis para investigadores. O texto narra os desenvolvimentos do projeto de 1986 a 2004, assim como marcos de iniciativas anteriores que contribuíram para os mesmos fins. Também são incluídas seções detalhando subprojetos dedicados à documentação de diferentes estados do Brasil e uma bibliografia de inventários e catálogos já disponíveis.
