Abstract:
This text is a commentary on Kenneth Maxwell's book Pombal, Paradox of the Enlightenment, published in English in 1995, later published in Brazil in 1996, and in a Portuguese edition in 2001, which was a different translation from that of the Brazilian edition. Besides a number of additions and bibliographical updates, the subtitle was suppressed in the Portuguese edition, so that its title was just simply 'The Marquis of Pombal'. The author, Kenneth Robert Maxwell (b. 1941), is a well-known British historian specializing in Iberian-American topics and themes from international relations who was, for a long time, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and later a visiting professor at Harvard University.
Este texto é um comentário sobre o livro 'Marquês de Pombal: Paradoxo do Iluminismo', de Kenneth Maxwell, publicado em inglês em 1995, e posteriormente no Brasil em 1996 e numa edição portuguesa de 2001, cuja tradução difere da edição brasileira. Para além de vários aditamentos e atualizações bibliográficas, o subtítulo foi suprimido na edição portuguesa para que o título ficasse apenas'Marquês de Pombal'. O autor, Kenneth Robert Maxwell (1941) é um historiador britânico reconhecido, especializado em assuntos ibero-americanos e em relações internacionais e que, por muito tempo, fez parte do Conselho de Relações Exteriores e posteriormente foi professor visitante na Harvard University.
