- The Mughal succession crises occurring between the political downfall of Akbar (c. 1600) and Aurangzeb’s death (1707) were portrayed in detail by a considerable number of European observers. This essay intends to study the way those critical moments, that would eventually lead to the disintegration of the Mughal empire, were openly desired both in Goa and Lisbon: they somewhat represented the life insurance of a defenseless Estado da Índia forced to face a giant—the Grão Mogor—that could not be controlled. On the other hand, and for different reasons, the agents of the English East India Company, operating on the ground, as well as the theatergoers that saw John Dryden’s plays in London, favored the dynastic stability of Timurid India. This represents an interesting diversity of European images of the Mogor, and asks for a careful analysis of their motives and impact.
- As crises de sucessão do Império Mughal que ocorreram entre a queda política de Akbar (c. 1600) e a morte de Aurangzeb (1707) foram retratadas em detalhe por um número considerável de observadores europeus. Este artigo pretende estudar a forma como estes momentos críticos, que levariam à desintegração do Império Mughal, foram abertamente desejados em Goa e Lisboa: de certa maneira eram um seguro de vida do indefeso Estado da Índia, obrigado a enfrentar um gigante – o Grão Mogor – que não podia ser controlado. Por outro lado, e por motivos diferentes, os agentes da Companhia Britânica das Índias Orientais, que operavam no território, assim como o público que assistiu às peças de John Dryden em Londres, defenderam a estabilidade da dinastia Timurid na Índia. Isto representa uma interessante diversidade de representações europeias do Império Mughal, exigindo uma análise cuidadosa das suas motivações e dos seus impactos.
