Bike Infrastructure Improvements in Denver, CO

Description

Abstract:
Denver, Colorado is known to be one of the most bike-friendly cities in the US. However, there have been approximately 700 reported bike related accidents since 20173. Additionally, only 2.2 percent of commuters bike city-wide, and only 6.6% bike downtown. These low numbers may be explained by a lack of safe biking infrastructure causing difficult and sometimes dangerous biking conditions. As Denver experiences worsening car congestion, and the addition of 1,000 people moving to the city every month, Denver must look at alternative forms of clean transportation strategies such as improving biking infrastructure to reduce congestion from short-medium length trips. This GIS project aims to identify Denver’s best existing bike routes and suggest where infrastructure can be improved taking into account comfort (slope) and safety (bike path speed limits and existing bike networks). I use a standard weighted model similar to Thistle and Neumann’s GIS bike cost analyses.
