Protecting the Elderly: Access to Utilities and Health Outcomes in Elderly Patients

Description

Abstract:
Many vulnerable populations in the U.S. face a lack of access to utility services. In particular, the elderly are more likely to be unable to afford utilities due to restricted income, and can suffer detrimental health effects from lack of utilities, such as shut-off of medical devices and risk of hypothermia and heat stroke. This quality improvement project aimed to gain a population level understanding of utility insecurity needs among elderly patients at East Bay Community Action Program (EBCAP), a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in RI, and explored the efficacy of programs designed to help elderly patients with utility access.
