Abstract:: There is often a misconception that food insecurity (a social determinant of health) only significantly impacts the poor. Previous research has shown that illness and wellness are both associated with access to nutritional and affordable food independent of socioeconomic status. A lack of comprehensive SDOH data in a pediatric setting restricts providers from identifying the underlying social issues that exacerbate food insecurity and negative health outcomes. The aim of this study was to implement an SDOH screening tool and identify social determinants of health such as food insecurity in addition to addressing barriers to assistance.
