Sanctifying the Past: History-making as a process of canonization

Description

Abstract:
Using canonization as a framework to engage the process of history creation and collective memory, this thesis seeks to understand why certain narratives gain a cultural resonance and enter a historical "canon" (and why others do not). Chapter 1 lays theoretical groundwork for the connection between canonization and history-making, and Chapters 2 and 3 are case studies taken from United States history (Rosa Parks and Japanese internment, respectively).
