Optimization of Genetic Material Recovery for Downstream Analyses

Description

Abstract:
The effective detection and analysis of nucleic acids is critical for many fields, including clinical diagnostics, environmental testing and forensic science. Intracellular nucleic acids hold essential genetic information that can be used for a myriad of reasons, such as identifying the presence of biological traces or to diagnose, treat, prevent and cure illnesses. However, the analysis of nucleic acids can be complicated and involve several multi-step processes. The following chapters in this thesis include two distinct projects in which robust genomic extraction and recovery procedures were conducted from microsamples of whole blood or bacterial cells. These nucleic acid extraction procedures were optimized to allow for maximum extraction of genomic material with simple and time-effective procedures.
