Analysis of HIV/AIDS Stigma and Pregnancy Losses and Terminations in Cameroon Using the Demographic and Health Surveys Data

Description

Abstract:
Aim: To analyze rate of pregnancy losses and pregnancy terminations in Cameroon as it relates to household income. Methods: An analysis of combined individual and household recode data from the Cameroon Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS), 2011 was performed. The data contained 15,586 women who were of reproductive age (15 – 49 years). The determinant of interest is the wealth index which was constructed using the PCA (Principal Component Analysis) method, while the health outcome is the proportion of women who have ever experienced miscarriages, stillbirths or induced abortions. T-test and multivariate logistic regression analyses was conducted for women who completed the 2011 Cameroon DHS. Results: The multivariate logistic regression analysis shows that there is a significant relationship between wealth quintile and proportion of birth outcomes, with greater wealth associated with an increased likelihood of having either a miscarriage, stillbirth or an abortion. Conclusion: When significant confounders are considered, poorest quintile respondents experience fewer pregnancy losses and pregnancy terminations. The relationship with wealth is strongest for abortions in the poorest quintile as opposed to the richest quintile.
