- Abstract:
- This study is a narrative history of peace in the classical Greek period from the formation of the Delian League to the death of Alexander and the geographic scope is that typical of histories of this period, focusing on the eastern Mediterranean communities of mainland Greece, the Aegean, and Asia Minor. Peace is defined both as a condition and as a suite of activities, some of these activities associated with achieving this condition and others with enjoying it. Chapters are dedicated to (1) defining/describing peace, (2) the exchange of tribute for peace, (3) enduring periods of low-quality peace, and (4) new approaches to peace in the fourth century. The sources are literary and epigraphic and extensive use is made of Thucydides, Xenophon, the orators, and the epigraphic remains of the Athenian empire, particularly the tribute-quota lists.
