Beyond the Walls: How Black Youth in Graffiti Crews in Toronto Perceive Their Roles in Society & Community Spaces

Description

Abstract:
Graffiti art blossomed throughout North America in the 1970s as an avenue for marginalized youth to make their voices heard in the face of oppression and to create a sense of place for themselves and their communities. While there is extensive literature on graffiti art, there is minimal research on the relationship between the individual and the graffiti crew, a group of associated graffiti artists that often work with and learn from each other. Although graffiti was initially embraced by marginalized youth in urban areas, their voices and contributions remain absent in scholarly work. This is especially true for black youth. This research explores how black youth participation in graffiti crews in Toronto impacts how black graffiti artists perceive their roles in society and other community spaces. I will use ethnographic methods to carry out research with black youth who consider themselves to be members or former-members of a graffiti crew. I will conduct extensive interviews with the participants, and will spend time with the graffiti crews as a participant-observer, collecting qualitative data on their interactions. I hypothesize that graffiti crew spaces serve as communities of practice, provide an art education, and ingrain valuable skills and lessons in black youth that are transferable to other communities they engage with.
