Ethics Curricula in U.S. Medical Schools: A Survey

Description

Abstract:
The LCME accreditation guidelines surrounding ethics curricula are vague, giving individual institutions room to shape content, format, etc. With respect to ethics, given that there is relatively less standardized content compared to other areas of medical education, little is known about what is taught and how it is taught across institutions. Review of existing literature revealed historical notions of what constitutes a “comprehensive” ethics education. We sought to obtain a picture of current approaches to medical ethics education, including its pedagogy, content, allotted time, and perceived/stated aims, in a cross-section of 4-year medical degree programs in the United States.
