- The essay examines Fernando Pessoa’s The Duke of Parma through its Shakespearean and early modern dramatic features, focusing on the construction of the Duke’s “other” nature, linked to alterity and insanity. It argues that Pessoa shapes identity through linguistic excess, with wit as a central device. Drawing on Renaissance and later theories of irony, wit operates as discursive strategy, theme, performance, and meta-reflection. Through soliloquies, debates, and fool figures, it mediates power, probes sanity, and questions reality. Language drives the drama, but wit—while heuristic—fails to secure stable knowledge, often reduced to “exterior wit.” This tension situates the play between Renaissance drama and Romantic and post-Romantic irony. Ultimately, the play becomes a mechanism of endless questioning, where language yields only partial access to reality, and wit stands as both its structural force and its tragic limit.
- O ensaio examina The Duke of Parma, de Fernando Pessoa, à luz dos seus traços dramáticos shakespeariano e do início da modernidade, centrando-se na construção da “outra” natureza do Duque, associada à alteridade e à loucura. Defende-se que Pessoa modela a identidade através de um excesso linguístico, tendo o engenho (wit) como dispositivo central. Convocando concepções renascentistas e posteriores da ironia, o engenho funciona como estratégia discursiva, tema, performance e meta-reflexão.
