Description
- Abstract:
- This paper explores the relevance of Fernando Pessoa’s heteronymism for thinking in the age of generative Artificial Intelligence, focusing on systems like ChatGPT. Drawing on Julian Jaynes’s theory of consciousness and Hannah Arendt’s reflections on thinking, I argue that AI, while offering cognitive enhancement, risks eroding critical reflection by automating judgment—echoing Jaynes’s “bicameral mind” and Arendt’s “great evil” of unthought. Pessoa’s heteronymism provides a model for cultivating robust inner dialogue, where multiple perspectives generate meaning. Such plurality sustains human critical capacities and offers a framework for envisioning dialogical, multi-agent AI systems, resisting cognitive entropy and passive engagement.
