Healthcare Leadership Training: Medical Students’ Opinions and Curriculum Development

Description

Abstract:
Medicine today is a fluid field that ebbs and flows as new technologies, practitioners, insurance changes, and models of care are added daily. To provide the best possible care to patients, we need strong physician leaders who can navigate and guide the complex medical field of today while fostering strong teamwork within multi-disciplinary teams. It is important that medical students are exposed to leadership training early on so they can build strong leadership skills. Despite this, many medical schools do not offer formal leadership training. This project aimed to better understand what students think about leadership training in medical education. It was found that medical students at The Warren Alpert Medical School value leadership training(n=96) and think it is an important part of medical education. They also do not feel that they are given enough leadership training. This feedback was then utilized to begin to build a hands-on leadership training pre-clinical elective. The ultimate goal of this project is to work to integrate leadership training into the pre-clinical curriculum at The Warren Alpert Medical School.
