- This essay examines the 1964 Hungarian premiere of Fernando Pessoa—four poems translated by Ágnes Nemes Nagy and published in the journal Nagyvilág—as an episode in the politics of literary transmission under the Kádár dictatorship. Drawing on theories of lateness, contrapuntal reading, and world literature, it argues that translation in 1960s Hungary functioned not merely as cultural mediation but as a form of literary latency, allowing suppressed modernist voices to persist within the public sphere. The essay further proposes that Hungarian modernism survived and renewed itself through translation as pretext, with Pessoa’s work playing a decisive role in this process.
- Este ensaio examina a estreia húngara, em 1964, da poesia de Fernando Pessoa – quatro poemas traduzidos por Ágnes Nemes Nagy e publicados na revista Nagyvilág – como um episódio da política de transmissão literária sob a ditadura de Kádár. A partir de teorias do estilo tardio, da leitura contrapontística e da literatura mundial, argumenta-se que a tradução funcionou, na Hungria dos anos 1960, não apenas como mediação cultural, mas também como forma de latência literária, permitindo a sobrevivência de vozes modernistas silenciadas no espaço público. O ensaio propõe ainda que o modernismo húngaro se renovou através da tradução como pretexto, tendo a obra de Pessoa desempenhado um papel decisivo nesse processo.
