An Autoethnography of Stebechve: Jewish Community, Burial, and Memory through Diaspora in New York

Description

Abstract:
Cemeteries reveal information about those buried there long after the end of their lives. This thesis examines the Jews of Stebechve, focusing on their lives and their communal burial in New York. Using historical documents, oral history interviews, and material culture analysis, this thesis shows that the Stebechve Jews formed a community in both life and death, with their burial reflecting their lived experiences and idealized worldviews. Comparative analysis reveals that the story of the Stebechve Jews parallels that of other Jewish communities, whose lives and burials have meaningful implications for the study of diasporic people. This thesis’s autoethnographic nature shows the importance of this form of anthropology in producing more personal, engaged research.
