Medical School-Community Partnership for Undocumented Victims of Intimate Partner Violence and Human Trafficking

Description

Abstract:
Lack of legal status can trap immigrants and their children in unhealthy, abusive and coercive relationships. The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) allows undocumented victims of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and human trafficking to petition for legal status in the US. Recently, local advocates noticed increased number of cases sent back from US Citizenship and Immigration Services with requests for further evidence of abuse that victims do not have. Clinicians can play a crucial role in helping victims receive legal status by providing medical evaluations that document evidence of physical and psychological abuse. This research presents early outcomes of a community-based pilot intervention between local domestic violence non-profit and Brown Medical School Asylum Clinic (BHRAC) to provide free medical evaluations for VAWA applicants. After two years of partnership, 6 cases were approved, 11 are pending, two were denied, and one was not submitted. In the future, we hope to formalize this and other community partnerships in order to further support the local undocumented immigrant community.
