This guide was created in collaboration with Project Canntalk, a qualitative research study about cannabis messaging, at the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies (CAAS). CAAS is a center for studying substance use within Brown University’s School of Public Health (SPH). A wide range of research studies regarding substance use are conducted at CAAS, from laboratory investigations to community engaged interventions. This project was conceptualized by conducting a needs assessment. First, it was observed during the processes of reviewing interview transcripts that certain cannabis-specific terms were getting lost in translation during the transcription phase. After conversations with principal investigator of the study, members of the study staff, and the director of the office of community engagement at Brown SPH, it was identified that a priority of CAAS is advancing community engagement. It was agreed that compiling informational materials for research assistants lacking knowledge about cannabis language could reduce communication barriers between community members and research assistants, and advance community engagement. Possessing basic knowledge about how people communicate about cannabis could help research assistants engage people who use cannabis more effectively.
