- Abstract:
- This thesis explores the disproportionate rates of diabetes and COVID-19 among the LatinX populations of Rhode Island in comparison to Non-Hispanic Whites [NHW]. To contextualize these disparities, the thesis will examine the behavioral and social determinants that contribute to LatinX peoples’ elevated risk for metabolic diseases and subsequently for diabetes. The thesis then highlights the work of “Vida Sana”, a program pioneered and operated by Clínica Esperanza / Hope Clinic (HEHC) in Providence, Rhode Island, which aims to improve the health outcomes of LatinX people through community intervention programs. The corpus then examines the adapted role of Clínica Esperanza / Hope Clinic amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The thesis includes interviews with the clinic’s community health workers and program leaders in an effort to understand the program and explain its advantages in comparison to other disease self-management programs. Lastly, it implements guidelines and suggestions for future research and minority health interventions in an effort to improve the quality, accessibility, and efficacy of public health intervention programs for the most vulnerable communities.
