- Abstract:
- The article focuses on problems and issues associated with the level of food prices, the degree of food price volatility and market imperfections as of September 2011. Poverty can be increased for groups that are net food consumers, and they would have less discretionary income to spend on other items, when they spend more on food. It also explains that after a shock to either supply or demand, large price changes are needed to restore food market equilibrium. Important policy issues concerning food which governments are faced with, including the need to make food markets work better for production growth and the need to give households and farmers more ways to insure themselves against future price shocks.
