- Abstract:
- The author argues that the food crisis as of September 2011 resulted from the long-term deregulation in agriculture in both national policies and the level of the world economy. It also mentions the immediate causes of rising food prices and asserts that the instability and volatility of food prices is as important as the existence of high prices. Regulation of food and agriculture from 1945 to 1970 happened at the level of national policy and the world economy. Meanwhile, the deregulation of agriculture from the 1970s to the present was highlighted at the breakdown of international commodity agreements and the incorporation of agriculture into General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).
