The Geopolitics of the Caucasus

Description

Abstract:
The article explores the geopolitics of the Caucasus which has a strategic importance for Russia and other powers. The strategic importance of the region to the foreign policy constraints and opportunities of several countries including Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia is examined. Several lessons from the August 2008 war between Georgia and Russia are analyzed, as well as the five secessionist conflicts that emerged in the former Soviet Union such as the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
