- The article explores the evolution of the role of Russia in the Caucasus following the collapse of the Soviet Union. It describes the manner in which the Russia-Georgia War of August 2008 had a profound effect on both the North and South Caucasus. The defined Russian interests in the region are enumerated, including preventing the disintegration of Russia's control of the North Caucasus and establishing its political primacy in the South Caucasus. The article also examines the implications of Russia's military action against Georgia for U.S. interests in the region
