- The article discusses the causes and consequences of the democratic gap in the Middle East. According to the author, despite promises of reform by most Arab leaders, expenditures on Arab democratization projects by bilateral and multilateral donors and an assertive Arab media, authoritarian governments continue. He mentions that powerful executives politically marginalize the other branches of government, making them unable of performing even their restricted constitutional and legal roles.
