- Abstract of Characterization of Temperature-Pressure Induced Morphology in High Molecular Weight Poly (Ethylene Oxide) by Sheila Velagapudi, ScM., Brown University, May 2020 The focus of this investigation was to determine the effect of applying pressure and temperature on Poly (ethylene oxide) and analyze potentially new thermodynamic or mechanical properties. In order to study the properties of poly (ethylene oxide), polarized microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, and the Instron were used to analyze the structure and properties of the polymer after different processing conditions were applied. Polarized microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that processing poly (ethylene oxide) at various temperatures and time points could induce new morphology and varying degrees of crystallinity depending on the processing conditions. Birefringence was seen in processed samples as well, indicating new degrees of crystallinity and spherulite formation. Processing conditions influenced the heat of fusion and mechanical properties including strength and elasticity of the samples as evidenced by the DSC and Instron results. Overall, new morphology and characteristics can be produced in poly (ethylene oxide) through multiple processing conditions, which can be studied for new, beneficial properties.
