Sleep and Pediatric ADHD: Effects of Sleep Restriction on Performance on the Multi-Source Interference Task

Description

Abstract:
This thesis examines the cognitive consequences of sleep loss in the context of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptom severity in children. We used a wake extension protocol in conjunction with the Multi-Source Interference Task (MSIT), a cognitive interference task, in order to probe this relationship. Thirteen children (7F, 11.7±1.28 years) with a range of ADHD symptom severity completed a repeated-measures experiment on two consecutive nights in the laboratory. The first night was a baseline night, during which participants were allowed 9.5h time-in-bed. The subsequent night was a sleep restriction night, during which participants were only given 4h time-in-bed. Each morning they took part in an fMRI session which included the MSIT. We found no significant effects of sleep on performance, regardless of ADHD symptom severity. While robust interference effects were present throughout all analyses, the interference effect was only associated with symptom severity in the inattentive symptom domain, and not in the hyperactive-impulsive domain. We found that there was a decrease in interference effects in children with more severe inattentive symptom presentation. No interactions were found between symptom severity, sleep, and interference, which leads us to suggest that individuals with more severe ADHD presentation might not show increased vulnerability to acute sleep loss as assessed by performance on a cognitive interference task.
