Interview with Sylvia Ann Soares

Description

Abstract:
In this interview Ms. Soares shared many of her experiences growing up in Rhode Island. She discusses her family’s alcoholism, gender roles in Cape Verdean families, her own recovery from alcoholism, her father’s harsh discipline, her mother’s battle with Alzheimer’s, and the changes in the Fox Point neighborhood since she grew up. She also shared an incident she was gang-raped by a group young men from Fox Point when she was thirteen. Ms. Soares considered herself an "outsider" of Fox Point and throughout this interview she focuses on incidences that made her feel this way.
