Boutin moved to Fox Point from Cranston, RI in 1986 and relocated the salon, originally called Stylistics, in 1990. The salon has been in one other location on Wickenden Street and had an additional location on Thayer Street for about three years. In her interview, Boutin speaks about providing styling services to a varied clientèle, including long-time Fox Point residents, new, young professionals in the neighborhood, doctors from the nearby teaching hospital and university professors and students from Brown, RISD and Johnson and Wales. Boutin is the daughter of Therese Girovard of Manville, RI and Harvey Boutin of Central Falls, RI. She was born in Providence in 1951 and has lived in Providence and the surrounding suburbs all her life. She is the fifth of six children, and many of her siblings still live in the areas surrounding Providence. Boutin graduated from Central Falls High School in 1969 and attended Providence College from 1971-73 and took courses at RISD in 1973. After marrying Stephen Puleo, she moved to Cranston where Puleo opened the salon, Stylistics. Boutin eventually got a real estate license and decided to purchase property and move to Fox Point in 1986. After moving the salon to Fox Point where it was renamed Scissorhands, the couple eventually decided to divorce, but they continue to own both their real estate business and the salon together. Boutin describes them as best friends and excellent business partners. Boutin is an active member of the Wickenden Street business community, and in her interview she speaks about her involvement with committees on the highway relocation project and signage for Wickenden Street.
