- Sarah Gleason was born in the United States in 1942 to John Fischer of Texas and Elizabeth Wilson of Ireland. Mrs. Gleason grew up in White Plains, NY and New Hope, PA before attending Harvard University in Cambridge, MA from 1960 1964. Mrs. Gleason is married to Abbott (Tom) Gleason and they have two children, Nicholas (Nick) Abbott Gleason and Sarah Caperton Gleason. They have lived in Providence, RI since 1968 when Mr. Gleason took a job as a professor at Brown University. They have lived in the Fox Point neighborhood at 30 John Street since 1970. Mrs. Gleason worked in the education field for much of her life in capacities ranging from being the Executive Director of Reach Out and Read Rhode Island, to teaching the learning disabled, to acting as an education specialist for the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management from 1982 1987, and as a pre-school educator. Mrs. Gleason was a co-founder of the Brown-Fox Point Day Care Center in the early 1970s and has been involved with the Providence Preservation Society, has been a volunteer board member for Providence schools, and from 2007-2010 was a member of Friends of India Point Park. In this interview, Mrs. Gleason talks about memories of the Fox Point neighborhood from her forty years living at 30 John St, her involvement with work on India Point Park, and experiences in the neighborhood as someone who does not identify as a member of any of the ethnic groups represented in the diverse community.
